Abstract

Digital Transformation (DT) has become a strategic imperative for organizations worldwide, particularly in the financial sector, where rapid technological advances are reformulating operational structures, customer expectations and competitive dynamics. This research investigates the influence of digital transformation dimensions including strategy, barriers, challenges, outcomes, digital performance and DT implementation steps on the financial performance of Pakistani banks. The study incorporates risk management as a mediating variable and the perceived usefulness of financial technology (FinTech) as a moderating variable, thus providing a comprehensive mediation -moderation structure.

Grounded in theories such as Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), Resource-Based View (RBV), Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, Stakeholder Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study addresses the gap in the empirical understanding of digital transformation for the best performance results. Using a quantitative research project, the data were collected through structured questionnaires of senior professionals in the Pakistani banking sector. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test hypothetical relationships using SmartPLS.

The findings of this study confirm that various dimensions of digital transformation significantly affect the banks’ financial performance. Risk management mediates the relationship between digital transformation and performance, while FinTech's perceived utility positively moderates this relationship. The findings emphasize the strategic importance of aligning digital transformation efforts with robust risk management systems and leveraging FinTech client -centered solutions to optimize organizational performance.

This research contributes to theory and practice, extending the performance discourse of digital transformation through mediation and moderation mechanisms. It provides actionable information for banks’ executives, IT policy makers and strategist formulators to create integrated digital strategies, improve risk governance, and facilitate FinTech's adoption structures. Recommendations for future research and study limitations are also discussed.
