Purpose: This study aims to explore and document the benefits and challenges associated with Knowledge Management (KM) implementation in the construction industry, as identified by past research. Understanding these factors is critical for improving KM adoption and enhancing project and organizational performance in construction firms.
Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review (SLR) methodology was adopted to synthesize existing studies on KM implementation in the construction sector. Relevant research articles published over recent years were critically analyzed to identify key challenges and benefits, with an emphasis on socio-technical factors affecting KM success.
Findings :The review highlights multiple challenges including cultural resistance, lack of skilled personnel, inadequate technological infrastructure, and poor knowledge sharing. Conversely, KM implementation benefits such as improved collaboration, enhanced decision-making, and increased organizational learning were identified. The findings reveal that people and process-related issues are more critical barriers than purely technological challenges in construction KM initiatives.
Originality/value : This study contributes a comprehensive synthesis of KM implementation issues and advantages specific to the construction industry, an area with limited consolidated research. The results provide valuable insights for both academics and practitioners to design better KM strategies and overcome implementation barriers unique to construction projects.
